“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”
― Elie Wiesel
Michael Brown Jr. was an 18 year old just like any other until a week ago when he was murder by a police officer. Michael Brown Jr. was unarmed.
Why is a kid, who’s called a gentle giant by his family shot not once but nine times when he is unarmed?
What were the rules of engagement?
The police follow what is called a use of force continuum and it’s their protocol for engagement
While the specific progression of force varies considerably (especially the wide gap between empty hand control and deadly force) among different agencies and jurisdictions, one example of a general model cited in a U.S. government publication on use of force is shown below.
- Physical presence — depending on the totality of the circumstances, a call/situation may require additional officers or an on scene officer may request assistance in order to gain better control of the situation and gain more safety for themself. Depending on the circumstances of the situation: for example, how many people are on scene with the officer – a larger presence may be required. However, if 10 officers arrive at a scene with only a single suspect, the suspect may perceive he is under arrest; as a large police presence can constitute an arrest based on the suspect’s perceptions.
- Verbal commands
- Empty-hand submission techniques, PPCT – Pressure Point Control Techniques
- Intermediate Weapons (e.g. baton, pepper spray, Taser, beanbag rounds, Mace (spray), etc.)
- Lethal force.
To illustrate how different agencies may use differing models for the same purpose, the U.S. Navy teaches a six-step model: Officer presence, Verbal commands, Soft controls, Hard controls, Intermediate Weapons, and Lethal force. Hard controls includes the use of tools such as hand-cuffs, while soft controls equates to empty hand above, describing techniques where the officer must engage a resisting detainee. When escalating, voluntary submission to cuffs is a viable way to prevent the need for empty hand submission techniques which place the officer and the detainee at physical risk. When de-escalating, hard controls (i.e.: cuffs and isolation in the rear seat of a cruiser) gives officers a reasonable and achievable goal after altercation with a detainee during which higher levels of force may have been required.
Where were steps 1-4 in the Michael Brown murder?
The people demand justice. Ferguson residents exhibited their lawful right to peacefully protest after Brown’s breathless body lay in cold-blood for four to five hours. Peaceful protests, which our within our constitutional rights as citizens of the Red, White, and Blue were denied. Instead the citizens in BLUE suited up in riot gear and brought along their K-9 counterparts.
Monday night social media was in full swing sharing pictures of M-16s being drawn on innocent people just trying to get to their homes. Tear gas and rubber bullets injured peaceful protesters and media were told to leave the scene immediately.
Aren’t you glad you’re paying your taxes?
As of Tuesday, the FAA had issued a no-fly zone on Ferguson, Missouri “TO PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES.” So the men with automatic weapons, tear gas, and armor need a safe environment.
What about our youth?
What about our communities?
Who is going to provide us with a safe environment to flourish?
WHAT ABOUT US?
This isn’t a black or white issue entirely.
This is a justice issue.
“This is about our global community, it’s time to stand up for what’s right. ” says Jason Ison an artist based out of Ohio. He’s right, this is our global community and it doesn’t matter if a murder like this happens once or it happens thousands of times. It’s time to take a stand and say “Not in our house.”
Take your constitutional rights and hold your ground, but please stop the looting. It makes no sense to destroy and steal from members of the community.
As the boys in blue once again protect their own the hacker group Anonymous has release this image alleging this to be Michael Brown’s murdered and it’s been yet to be confirmed.
Ferguson remains under siege.
A family grieves for their senseless loss.
A killer remains free.
Our tax dollars are being used against us.
We are a nation with a new club that nobody wants to join: The Unarmed Club.
This is not only a black and white issue. This is a fight for our safety and our lives. The people meant to protect and serve are killing our kids.
“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.”
― Benjamin Franklin
If Anonymous did get the wrong man then let’s hope he stays safe, but what did Scooby do? Why did he change his name?
If Anonymous did get it right then let that be a message to the United States government that you may not have our backs but we will have each others.
To the men and women being shielded by their shields: You work for us. You work for your community. Stop dipping into the evidence. Stop acting like you’re above the laws you’re meant to uphold.
STOP MURDERING INNOCENT PEOPLE.
There’s lines being drawn. Who draws your line? Where will you stand?
